We are a proud team of university students studying Computer Games Design at the South Essex college of Further and Higher Education under our tutor Ramakrishna Maccha. We are all excited to be given the opportunity to be able to gather our ideas as a group and produce a game to show off our passion as game designers.

Our Team

Our team is striving towards creating a portable mobile game that focuses on entertain children at a young age, whilst also educating them on their maths and English skills with the addition of fighting off monsters and solving puzzles. Within our game, we will be producing an environment that is both educational and engaging at the same time, so that kids will be focused on a wide aspect of activities while following the character on his journey to become stronger to fight off the monsters.

Our Goal

Meet The Team

Team Lead, Technical Development

Josh Gunnett

My role is to help support the group as team lead to make sure that the project runs smoothly as well as being responsible for building the end product, alongside making sure the mechanics run smoothly as I will be running the technical development. As the leader of the team, I have been making sure that our game works according to plan by setting personal deadlines. So that my team is working to a sufficient degree in producing high quality work while also making sure that I can support the other members of the group with whatever I can if I feel like they are falling behind. I have also been organising time tables and lists of features that are needed for the project to make sure everyone knows what they need to complete by a certain deadline.

As I’m in charge of the technical side of the development I have also been creating the code for mobile games mechanics, sound, lighting, particles & controls that will be used within Unity. With this, I have been researching and testing a wide range of possible mechanics so that our game can perform to our exact expectations, as well as give the players a smooth gaming experience without the worry of bugs or crashes.

I was offered the position of team lead as I am fair when working in a team but can be firm when I feel like things are slacking, without causing a falling out between the people I work with. I do not aim to silence anyone’s opinions and I like to have friendly, open conversations within the team so that everyone gets their fair share of input within the project’s construction. As I have led a few online robot combat tournaments; I have had to plan out a set of rules for competitors to follow, create a fighting arena for the competition to take place in, and create a suitable, organised structure for those that are entering, as to make sure they know when to get their entrants in by, as well as know where to go if they need help, this made me perfect for the role as I have had experience in building games in the past which will allow me to shear my knowledge in helping others who are not completely confident in following the game design pipeline.

I was also given the option of managing the Technical development as I have the most experienced with programming languages out of the people in my team. In the work I have done in the past I feel like I can work comfortably with C# as I have a clear understanding on how to build a script for a specific function, notably I have also used languages such as Lua and Python. I have utilised Lua within a gaming engine known as Roblox Studio to develop games using the scripting knowledge I gained through my experience within Lua.

My role in this team is to lead as a marketing manager and to help support our group as an assistant artist. It is my job within this team to make sure we know who our target audience is and to follow those guidelines in making sure that our end project strives to meet their satisfaction, I have also oversee creating any posters, logos, questionnaires and merchandise that could be used to sell our game to the market. In addition, I have built our website to show off what we have created as a group and have been tasked to make sure everything is running smoothly and up to date.

As an assistant artist I have also been supporting the teams lead artist with any additional work that needs to be done for the game to meet it standard whether it would be small clean up jobs on the game assets or creating them. To reduce the time being spent on creating the game I have also been gifted the task of creating out beloved character Pip and Charlie with the addition of creating some music for our game.

I was offered the role of being the Lead marketing manager as I have studied the ins and outs of the product market through GCSE Graphic Products and GCSE/A-level Products Design which has assisted my understanding on how to attract an audience through a product. With these skills I was able to share what I know with my team to help their further understanding on developing a product for a targeted audience and the steps needed to follow a set guideline on how we can meet that criteria.

I had also agreed to help as an assistant artist as art has always been both my hobby and go to subject as I have a fine eye for detail with the ability to understand how to create a story using a still image. I have always practised art in my own time but as I started to think about my future option I decided to take BTEC Art and Design for the very reason to improve my skills as a designer and work my way up the ladder from 2D art to 3D Game art.

My role in this team is to lead as the head artist and take the main role as the group’s animator. As a lead artist I have been in control of creating the main assets for our game and helping to assist in developing any additional creative content that needs an artistic mind, this can be looking at how our characters are presented in the game, looking into how the textures with provoke emotion when being placed into the environment as well as assisting the team lead with how the environment will look in the end product. With additional feedback from the lead marketing manager, it is my job to also insure that what is being created follows the specified theme and that the game looks attractive to both a young and older audience, as a requirement of taking this role I have been making sure to keep in check with all the creative work that is being developed, as well as overseeing any possible changes that have been made after the base development of the concept work that has been created for this game which includes; Poster work, logos, character designs, environment layouts, textures, assets and UI designs.

As the group’s main animator, I have also been working on the 2D art work on Photoshop so that I can animate them by hand to be used as moving sprites in the final end project. As I have extended knowledge in animation from past courses I have and will be assisting the lead marketer in creating any additional animations that may need to be done for our website or any other additional media.

I was offered the role as lead artist as I have acquired the necessary art skills in order for me to produce high quality art work that can be applied to this project. In the past, I have studied GCSE Art to refine my skills then I joined Computer Games Design in college to further my skills and to apply what I know to a new art form in 3D. During this I’ve been taught how to animate, draw perspective and I’ve been taught colour theory as well as how to apply these things into a gaming environment. During my free time I have also been working on these skills to see what I can achieve and presenting them on a website such as Artstation to show the progress of my art work. With these skills it will allow me to share what I know with the team and help guide them into producing high quality art work and animations to make our game look professional.
